This should come as no surprise, but my family is the most important thing in my life. From raising my kids to looking after my grandchildren, my heart is fullest when I’m taking care of those I love. Having the roles reversed and relying on help from my sons and daughters was an adjustment I just didn’t see coming.
I’m the type of person who truly loves to live their life. Whether it’s walking on the beach, visiting theme parks, or just going to the movies, I cherish making memories with my friends and family. When I was diagnosed with CIDP, those outings quickly became challenging.
You can ask anyone I know—I’ve always enjoyed staying busy. I love putting my hands to work, whether it was making jewelry, painting at home, or cooking homemade empanadas for my family. That’s why it was so clear when something was off with my body. Over time, I started noticing a loss of strength in my legs. Balancing became difficult, and sometimes I’d even trip. My hands became weak. It was challenging to brush my hair or paint.
One day, I was getting ready to put a chicken in the oven when I lost my balance and fell on the kitchen floor. I had to gather up some strength to reach the kitchen counter and pull myself up to stand. Thankfully, I had my children to help me into the van and to rush me to the hospital.
After being hospitalized a number of times, I was officially diagnosed with CIDP. With the help of multiple neurologists, I began trying different treatment options. Although some provided moderate relief, I wasn’t fully satisfied with my physical abilities, and the constant visits to the infusion center became disruptive.
When my neurologist told me about a different treatment called VYVGART Hytrulo, I initially had some reservations about making a change. But I was also excited and hopeful to try something different. My doctor told me not all patients respond to treatment and to let them know if I experienced any symptoms getting worse.
I’ll admit I was a little nervous knowing I was one of the first patients my doctor prescribed VYVGART Hytrulo to. But then, I began to see the difference this once-weekly injection could make. I was encouraged by small wins, like not having as many challenges brushing my hair or washing the dishes.
I know that my life will always look a little different with my condition, but it feels like my life. With my improved CIDP symptoms and the arm and leg function I’ve maintained, I can continue to cook meals for my family. I am even happy to be able to do the dishes.
I still rely on my walker to get around sometimes, but lately I’ve been able to enjoy activities like painting with my daughters. And I can even do the little things, like opening a water bottle on my own.
With the impact that VYVGART Hytrulo has had on my CIDP symptoms, I can do many of the things I’m truly passionate about. I continue to make my empanadas—trust me, my grandkids can’t get enough of them. I pick up my grandkids, and I make my own jewelry.
Thanks to VYVGART Hytrulo, my family and I can make memories worth cherishing. And that’s what matters most.
